Dear Wittenberg Friends,

Summer is upon us so it’s time for us to remind you that just because you are away from church, the church is still, well, the church!

With several large projects in the rearview mirror and the possibility of other property concerns on the horizon. We are blessed that we can maintain our facilities so well. We are still working to recover from some large expenses such as the HVAC system in the sanctuary and the septic line at the parsonage.

While we’ve been able to pay those expenses, our monthly expenses have exceeded our offering. With summer on the way, and the usual lag in giving expected, I hope you will consider maintaining your tithe through these lean months.

It’s enormously helpful to the congregation’s balance sheet if your gifts, tithes and offerings continue to come in regularly, even if you are away. There are many ways to give and hopefully one of these will be easy for you:

Make it up: When you return, give a little more in the weeks that follow.

Use your envelopes: Here’s a tip that’s good not only for summer, but year-round: If you use giving envelopes and checks, simply prepare them weeks in advance and bring them to church when convenient.

Use banking bill pay: Most online banking services will write and send checks for you. Just plug in the church address, the amount of the gift and how often you want it sent. If you do not use online banking a teller can help you with this at most banks.

Enroll in electronic giving: Use the congregation’s online giving portal to regularize your gift, tithe or offering.

Give monthly or quarterly: Sometimes it’s hard to anticipate how many Sundays you’ll be away from church. Planning your gift, tithe or offering for monthly or quarterly can keep you current.

Your gifts to the church not only help maintain the property and pay the staff, they also make it possible for Wittenberg to engage in outreach projects that are our call as Jesus-followers. Upcoming we are planning for our Back to School Backpack and Supply Giveaway, and the Red Cardinal Romp. Our facilities house our beloved Preschool and it is our duty and joy to tend to those spaces of love and care for the 2,3, and 4 year olds. We are also excited about the Blessing Box and how that simple project can impact the lives of families in our neighborhood.

Your gifts to Wittenberg make all of this possible. Giving is a part of our spiritual practice as a church body and it is through individual gifts as well as the church’s generosity that we are able to make an impact in a hurting world.

Blessings on your summer plans and traveling mercies to all who wander,

Pastor Heather

Dear Wittenberg, It’s that time of the year when our bodies begin yearning for warmth and comfort, cozy clothes and hot meals. It’s also getting to be that time of the year that we get busier and busier. We may find it hard to slow down and appreciate the goodness all around us. So many of us have been taught that the celebrations of Thanksgiving and Christmas demand unrealistic perfection, a certain meal, a special outfit, a perfect home. I remember my own mother, run ragged from...

Dear Wittenberg, It was my honor and delight to get to deliver Meals-on-Wheels this week as a part of Wittenberg’s service to that agency. (Thanks to Linda Trier, Nancy Trexler, and Sandra Phillips who also delivered this week, and to Joy Fisher for keeping us all coordinated all year long!) You may not know that I worked as the route coordinator for Meals-on-Wheels in Forsyth County for several years; this work is precious and was formative to my understanding of our call as people to reach...

Dear Wittenberg, Even though it’s about 90 degrees as I write this, I hear Autumn is around the corner! You’ll notice that we have a lot coming up at Wittenberg this fall! Information about those events can be found in this newsletter. During this season of new starts and new seasons we find ourselves asking, “How will we get new members?” Those are good questions, but we have to first ask, “Why do we want new members?” This question came up at our recent Executive Council meeting. While we...
